third edition of the Knapp edition of the Memoir and Poems by Wheatley, and first Knapp edition of the Poems by a Slave. George Moses Horton (1797-1893) is considered to be one of North Carolina's first poets. Though a slave, his master recognized Horton's poetical talent and not only allowed him a certain degree of freedom, but paid for the publication of a book of his poems, The Hope of Liberty. [Raleigh: J. Gales and Son, 1829]. Horton could often be found walking around on the campus at Chapel Hill. There, young men, courting their young ladies would often pay Horton a few pennies to compose a short amorous poem. Bibliographically, the present edition of Horton's poems follows the Philadelphia edition of 1837.
